My Tao

Lifelong learning

Martin Schuurmans • ebook • epub

  • Samenvatting
In My Tao- Lifelong learning Schuurmans talks to lessons in innovation. But in particular talks to his life lessons. There is more to life that you perceive and experience: ‘Strength grows out of vulnerability,’ is a lesson that he adopted in his leadership whereby, in the very difficult nineties for Philips, the Research Laboratory in Eindhoven could continue and EIT was successfully built (2008) despite many in the EU did not believe in this.

‘If you are interested in education, research, innovation or leadership, I can wholeheartedly recommend the smoothly written life story of Martin Schuurmans.’ Professor Leo Kouwenhoven renowned scientist and director of the Microsoft Quantum Lab in Delft, the Netherlands.

Fragment

Late summer 2006, six o'clock in the morning. A gong sounds. Within minutes there is a hell of a noise. The students, who sleep eight in a room, grab their uniforms and run up the hallway for rollcall. The school year begins at North Eastern University (NEU) in Shenyang, China. The students gather in a square in front of the dormitory. One by one their name is called. Then they form groups and march at a brisk pace: a military training to foster discipline and order right from the beginning of their studies. “Zou ba,” (pronounced tzoh bah) they shout. “Let's go!” Then they start running in step together on the running tracks.

Almost an hour later, they are exhausted. The temperature is already over 20 degrees Celsius. They go back to the dormitory and showers down the hallway, grab a bite in the canteen and at eight o'clock they are ready for their first lecture at the brand-new school within the walls of the university. They attend a class on Information Engineering, the technical development and production of software for mainly biomedical image processing. The school is called BMIE (Bio Medical Information Engineering) and was founded by Dr. Jiren Liu, CEO of Neusoft, and myself in the last year I worked for Philips Medical Systems. ×
