Work and the Urgency of the Gospel

Koos van der Linden • Boek • paperback

  • Samenvatting
God created us and commanded us to work, and he said it was good. Every day and every year we spend most of our time at work, and this is according to God’s design. Yet then Jesus appears, and Jesus calls fishers away from their nets, away from their work, and makes them fishers of men. He gives them a new purpose and a new vision for life. He gives them a new command: make disciples of all nations. The kingdom of God is at hand, the time is short, the need is high. So they go, to the ends of the earth.

This mission is not fulfilled yet and is still as urgent as ever. How does this mission relate to our work and our everyday life? How does this mission affect my choice of a career, for my place of residence? Is everyone called away from his nets to become a fisher of men?

Fragment

Work is designed by God and is a good thing. As Tim Keller in his book Every Good Endeavour writes:
“In short, work—and lots of it—is an indispensable component in a meaningful human life. It is a supreme gift from God and one of the main things that gives our lives purpose.”
Yet, in the New Testament we see a tension between this good endeavor and the new mission: to submit everything and anything to this one call: to follow Jesus, to leave everything for his sake and for the gospel. Therefore, this book tries to answer the following question:
How does our work relate to the urgency of the gospel? ×
