project Spilbergen

J. de Lint • Boek • paperback

  • Samenvatting
Around 1585 Joris van Spilbergen fled from his hometown Antwerp to the province of Zeeland and was soon employed by the wealthy trader DeMoucheron. In his service he acquired increasingly important assignments on DeMoucheron's fleet. Finally, in 1614 he was requested by the VOC to undertake a voyage to the 'Spice Islands' via Strait Magellan. However, Van Spilbergen wrongly never was appropriately rewarded for his skill, his perseverance and his achievements.

Fragment

With a light breeze the following day the journey was continued to the port of Callao de Lima. On approaching the coast, the coastal battery fired on the ships. Only the “Aeolus” was hit and no further serious damage was caused (fig. 19). The attack on this port was therefore discontinued.
Van Spilbergen however was unaware that the defense of Callao was marginal. The small Spanish war fleet normally stationed there, was in part used to secure the silver shipment to Panama and the remainder had been embroiled in the sea battle the previous day. Therefore, the armament was largely absent. No more than three obsolete guns were lined up and only one Franciscan monk had been sufficiently trained to fire them. ×
