Bax sighed deeply and sat down on the ground near a tree.
'Until you forget who you are,
he clarified.
“What do you mean?” Bloem didn't understand it.
“You went to see Professor Williams this morning, right?” Do you remember what you did before that?'
'Yes of course. I know I had decorated my room and Raf came to take me to the ward, where I met you all. I remember going to the research center with him and seeing the old Ouija board there.' She stopped the flow of words abruptly because she wasn't sure whether Bax would believe her.
But he thought she didn't remember.
“And now it becomes blank?” he asked. “
“No, I remember what happened,” she said, telling him what the letters had spelled.
Bax paused for a moment.
'The professor doesn't know that you still know. That your memory hasn't been erased?'
Bloem shook her head.
It was as if he was looking at her with new eyes.
“You shouldn't show that either!”
Bloem's heart skipped a beat.
“But I don't know what he wanted to erase, do I?” Bloem felt a little scared.
“Maybe you can still escape,” Bax said and took her hand. He pulled her along so quickly that she almost had to run.
He only stopped when the forest turned into heathland and sandy plains.
“Wait,” he told her and released her.
Looking at her, he walked from the shade of the trees towards the heath. Suddenly he clutched his head and he seemed to die of pain. He quickly walked back and fell to his knees.
“This is what happens to me when I leave the safe zone,” he gasped.
“Do you think it happens to me too?” she asked scared.
Carefully, one step at a time, she walked forward. To where Bax had gone.
She feared that she would be struck by lightning at any moment, but nothing happened.
“Thank God!” Bax said, turned, and wanted to walk away.
“Bax!” she shouted and ran after him.
'Leave while you still can, Bloem. Run!” he said, his expression dark.
'No!'.
“What?” He stopped walking abruptly and looked at her.
'Where do I have to go? What about you?' Bloem looked up at him.
He grabbed her upper arms.
“You're not chipped yet Bloem, so go!”
'No!'
He strode away again, and she ran after him.
“You're not a dumb blonde, are you?” he snapped on the way.
'I don't know where to go then, Bax! Don't wait so quickly.'
She continued to follow him.
