Samenvatting
‘No Return Flight” tells the story of the search for the 27 men that glided into the Arnhem area on 18 September 1944. Their Horsa, one among hundreds of plywood gliders, launched them into the cauldron that would be remembered as the Battle of Arnhem. After landing the Glider Pilots and the Air Landing soldiers wished each other good luck and went their separate ways. Possibly never to see each other again. More than fifty years later one of the Glider Pilots, Sergeant Morley ‘Taffy’ Williams, met a Dutch journalist on one of his annual visits to the commemorations in the Netherlands. Williams had been haunted all these years by the thought what had happened to his passengers. Well into his eighties he didn’t feel strong enough to find out himself anymore, so he asked the Dutchman to help him. This resulted in a kaleidoscope of many moving personal accounts. Further consequence was a heart-warming reunion between Morley Williams and some of his passengers. You can watch the video of their actual meeting through a link in this book. It also rekindled the search for several of Morley’s passengers who are missing to this very day.
