Samenvatting
KEEPERS OF THE NOW / digital campfire
We live in a world that is addicted to ‘the new’. The need to innovate, refresh and update is growing each day. We want more, faster and better. But because of this addiction, the buzz of ‘the new’, we tend to forget ‘the now’.
What if all your family photos were on a floppy disk and you didn’t transfer it to a CD in time, or you forgot to replace your videotapes with DVD's? Which finger did you use when dialing a dial telephone, how did it feel to have to turn over an LP after only 20 minutes of music? Now you just use touchscreen or put a playlist on repeat. When we get new toys we immediately forget the way we interacted with the older ones. Replacing old devices and updating interfaces is not unimportant, but it can also mean that we are losing information about our past, information which reveals its value only in hindsight.
Without a past, we are nothing. If we go on this way, it will not be long before we can’t look back beyond a few weeks or even days. Which is a huge difference compared to how long books endure. If we neglect to preserve information in a way that is sustainable, then what does the future ‘us’ have to look back on?
Therefore, we are the KEEPERS OF THE NOW.
Our concept is something everybody can take part in.
Remember, capture, print, archive, tell, save. For the future us.
We preserve ‘the now’ and capture this as broadly as possible. Things like how a laptop looks and works, obsolete digital media, the position of your arm during a selfie or the beeping sounds of the OV chip card are all a part of our archive and will be highlighted at our exhibition. Our archive of not yet lost objects, sounds and acts/movements is not presented in any particular order and not in any way complete. Our goal is simply to save future memories, memories that can be shared around the digital campfire.
The Keepers are Caitlin Berner, Wies van de Wal, Jordy Ringeling en John van der Meule
