In this book, I focus on the difficulties and hurdles, but also on the opportunities
and chances, young start-ups and spin-off companies encounter. We discuss how
players − be it academia, start-ups, established SMEs, large companies, or corporates
−, can better cooperate in order to bring about real innovation.
After the definition of the concept and the several types of start-ups, we delve into
the process of technological innovation, the innovation cycle and the position
and role of start-ups in this cycle. This will explain why the activities deployed,
and the risks run by start-ups are mutually quite different, depending on type and
character. Five situations throughout the innovation cycle, I have been working in
during my career, are positioned in the innovation model and compared regarding
their role, risks, and funding consequences. Then, we discuss the appropriateness
and inclination of companies with respect to the two main types of innovation –
breakthrough and incremental − and three basic strategies and financial models,
start-ups may follow when starting out. The chances of success of start-ups are
strongly influenced by the heritage and hospitality of regions and ecosystems.
Also, the triptychs ‘networks, campuses and projects’ and ‘field labs, demonstration
projects and launching customerships’ are of great importance to success. All these
elements are elaborated on. Finally, the specific role of governments in
the innovation process are dealt with, in particular concerning start-ups.
I use the Brainport Region Eindhoven, the region I have worked in for two-thirds of
my professional life, as a reference and background. By heritage, thanks to Philips
and DAF, Brainport is a high-tech region with a focus on the semicon, electronics,
mechatronics, smart-health and automotive industry. In appendix 11.3, the region
and its development over time, is introduced in more detail. I advise reading this
appendix before you start with the main text, as it will undoubtedly contribute to
understanding the material presented and its context.
